Sharpening Minds and Bodies: Cognitive & Physical Test with Carrollton High School Football

During their summer camp at Berry College, the Carrollton High School football team took on a challenge that went beyond the weight room and the practice field — a Cognitive and Physical Test designed to push both their minds and bodies to the limit.

Why Combine Cognitive and Physical Demands?

In football, the difference between winning and losing often comes down to how quickly an athlete can process information and make decisions under pressure. Strength and speed are critical, but so is mental sharpness, especially when fatigue sets in. The test was built to simulate those moments in a game when the body is tired, the clock is ticking, and quick, accurate thinking makes all the difference.

What the Test Involved

Athletes rotated through drills that blended physical exertion such as sprints, agility movements, and resistance work with mental tasks requiring focus, memory recall, rapid decision-making, and visual reaction time. The pairing forced players to maintain composure and precision while their heart rates were elevated, just as they would in a high-pressure game scenario.

Participants ran 10 yards and back, then they had to stack the hex nuts on top of each other with their non-dominant hand in order to win.

Participants hit the Blazepod with the indicated color for their team. Each correct hit added a point to the team's final score. a mishit deducted a point form their final score.

Participants searched for the indicated number on a grid with random numbers. Once the number was found, the next team member came up to find the next number. While the team member was looking for a number, the rest of the team was doing jumping jacks.

Participants solved a row of math problems. Once completed correctly, they were given a digit that was part of a 6-digit code to open the lock.

Memory Recall game. one participant from each team ran 15 yards and back to the images and flipped two of the images. If they matched, they left them face up. If they did not match, they turned them back over and the next participant went. The team with the most matches won the game.

Benefits for Athletes

By training cognitive skills alongside physical abilities, players strengthen the connection between brain and body. This type of integrated training develops:

  • Faster reaction times

  • Better decision-making under stress

  • Improved focus in chaotic environments

  • Mental endurance to match physical endurance

A Step Toward Game-Day Excellence

The Carrollton athletes attacked the challenge with determination, proving that they are willing to put in the work it takes to perform at their best when it matters most. Combining mental performance with physical conditioning gives them an edge, helping them stay sharp in the moments that define the outcome of a game.

At the end of the day, this was not just a test, it was a training ground for resilience, adaptability, and championship-level focus.
